Norway Prison

28 Jul

All the media in the world talk about Norway terrorism. How Anders Behring Breivik killed the people, how many people got attacked, and why he did this. Yesterday, I found a news that was not about the terror itself. It was about the prison where the killer will be sent. To me, the prison didn’t look like prison at all. Each prisoner has his own private room with a flat-screen TV and kitchen. During their free time, prisoners can enjoy fishing, horseback riding, and tanning. Even more, they can get music and musical lessons. Who would think this is a prison? It’s more like resort. The reason why Norway’s prison is so good(?) is because they think the criminals should be rehabilitated, not punished. I personally think criminals should be punished and completely isolated from society. Those kind of prisons would just encourage people to commit crime.

Most expensive car accident ever!

28 Jul

In Monte Carlo, Monaco, a woman caused a car accident, according to Seoulnews. The interesting thing about this accident is that it involved very expensive cars. It involved Bentley Azure, Mercedes-Benz S Class, Ferrari F430, Aston Martin Rapide, and Porsche 911. Fortunately, no one got hurt or injured. Although these cars values are about S1 million, the cost of repairs are going to be about only $60,000. This is not big important news, but it catches my attention because you are never going to see an accident that involves many luxury cars.

Male Discrimination

22 Jul

Ventura Corporation Ltd., a whole sale jewelry and beauty products company, has been accused of male discrimination by the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, according to AP. EEOC said this company repeatedly discriminated against men by hiring only women for its management positions from 2004 to 2008. I have heard and seen many lawsuits accusing of discriminating agains women, but not against men. Through out this semester, we’ve talked about discriminations agains various groups of people and white male was always the mainstream and majority. Still white male is a mainstream of the U.S society,  but in some places, men are minority, such as in this case jewelry and beauty industries. I think and hope this kind of discrimination will disappear soon like discrimination against women almost disappeared.

World Biggest McDonalds

22 Jul

USA Today reported that in 2012, there will be the world biggest McDonalds restaurant near Olympic Stadium in London. McDonalds said it’s going to be two-story, 32,000 square foot building just for one McDonalds Restaurant. Can you believe it? It’s bigger than half size of a football field. During Olympic and Paralympic Games, they expect to sell 50,000 Big Macs, 100,000 French Fries, and 30,000 cups of milkshakes with 470 staffs. I can’t imagine how huge it is going to be. However, my question is that are they going to need this huge McDonalds after the Olympics? I guess most tourists who travel London would want to go there, but I don’t think they are enough to run the business.

Another Scandal

21 Jul

In July 18th afternoon, I saw a news on the Internet that Rupert Murdoch killed himself. It was on the front page of British tabloid the Sun. They said he was found dead in his garden. One officer said they found chemicals in the kitchen and it killed him. When I first saw this news, I wasn’t that shocked because I could imagine how he had been stressed out. Unfortunately and fortunately, this news turned out to be not true. It was LulzSec, a group of hackers, hacked into the Sun’s webpage, AFP said. When I heard that it wasn’t true, I was surprised that major media was hacked that easily.

Worst job or best job?

16 Jul

I saw a news the other day about a woman in New Jersey who eats for money. Her name is Donna Simpson. She weights 602 pounds and wants to gain more to attain a target weight of 1000 pounds. She consumes 12,000 calories per day which is 6 times more than an average woman consumes. To pay for her food and living, she puts herself on the Internet so people can pay to watch her eat. People pay $20-$30 to watch her. She makes approximately $80,000 a year by putting herself on the Internet. Isn’t this the best job in the world? All she needs to do is eat which she loves to and wants to. One thing I just want to know is why people watch her? It’s just a big woman eating food. There is no fun or information at all. We know that if she eats, she will get bigger and she may die. People are killing her. They encourage her to eat more and more. So, people don’t spend your hard-earn money on killing a woman.

Information vs Privacy

8 Jul

168-year old British tabloid News of the World is shutting down because of phone hacking scandal. Is information more important than person’s privacy? I don’t think so. Personal privacy should be protected and respected whoever the person is. However, today, some media think that celebrities’ privacies don’t have to be protected and have to be informed to public. And audience wants to know more and more even though that informations are from immoral sources. And that makes media more obsess with people’ privacies. If they think about it from the other side for one time, they would understand how the celebrities feel.
